Best Wedding Colour Schemes, from Trending to Timeless

When it comes to planning your big day, choosing your wedding colour schemes is actually one of the more enjoyable parts of the process – and I should know, I’ve done it twice.

Being from a different country than my husband meant we planned two celebrations, one in the UK and one in New Zealand. With one wedding in the autumn, and one in the summer, it also meant two very different colour schemes.

For our British October wedding, we leant into the autumn hues, with terracotta bridesmaids dresses, navy suits, and rust ties. Flowers were all creams, blush and peaches with plenty of greenery.

The summer wedding in New Zealand called for a more vivid palette of pastel blues, pinks and yellows (which was just as well, as there was a torrential storm so the flowers brightened things up!).

Wedding colour schemes can range from the trending (like bright pastels), to the timeless (like terracotta and neutrals) – and deciding which one is right for your wedding can feel like a big decision.

My best advice: go for the colours that stand out to you the most, the ones that you love. It doesn’t matter if they are having a moment now or not – if you love them, you’ll always be happy with your choice.

Still stuck? To give you some inspo, we’ve rounded up some of the most popular wedding colour schemes below.

Trending wedding colour schemes

These colour combos are totally hot in the wedding sphere right now, but we think they’re pretty timeless too.

Red and pink

Red and pink is such a fun wedding colour scheme due to the vibrant hues and clashing tones. It’s bright enough for summer, and bold enough for a winter wedding, so you can use it whatever season you choose to say ‘I do’.

Sage green

Sage green has been trending for a few years now and for good reason: it’s such a calming and relaxing wedding colour scheme. Why not go a step further and kit your groomsmen out in sage green (or even olive green) suits to match the bridesmaids?

Bright pastels

Pastels have come back to the wedding industry in a big way this year. Not your mother's pastels, these colours are bolder and brighter than their ‘80s counterpart. Think: peaches, blues, buttercup yellows, pretty pinks and creams all mixed together.

Wildflower shades

Wildflower weddings have been on the up thanks to their offerings of vintage romance. Weddings featuring a wildflower colour scheme often incorporate blues, purples and yellows, with dried flowers pressed on caked, floral embossed stationery and, of course, large wildflower bouquets as the centrepieces.

Pink and green

Pink and green is the newest trend in wedding colour schemes and it’s already making big waves. Why not lean in completely to the Palm Springs vibe that the colours give off and line your tables with cacti and pink and green glassware?

Timeless wedding colour schemes

You can’t go wrong with a classic. Here are some of the best tried-and-tested wedding colour schemes.

Something blue

Looking to incorporate something blue into your wedding day? Why not make it the entire colour scheme? Blue and white is such a stunning colour combo, plus it means you can decorate your venue with all the hydrangeas you could ever hope for (budget permitting).

Dusty rose

Pinks will always be a favourite wedding colour scheme, but none so popular as dusty rose. It goes with anything and looks good on everybody. Case made.

Terracotta and rust

Oh, you’re having an autumn wedding? You probably want to lean into the terracotta and rust theme. Yes, we know it’s been done, but it also looks really, really good (trust us).

White with greenery

If you’re looking for something that will never go out of style, white and green is your best bet. It’s sleek, chic and saves you money too (a bouquet made mostly from greenery will cost you a lot less than flowers, FYI).

Blush and peach neutrals

Warm neutrals like beige, blush and peach are a perennial favourite for to-be-weds as it goes with almost any wedding venue, style, and setting. This colour scheme also means you can mix and match your bridal party colours or simply let everyone choose the colour they love most and run with it.

Monochrome

Bridal parties wearing all black or all white have become all the rage recently, and we think this is a trend that’s about to turn into a classic. Monochromatic dressing is so elegant and timeless, and is perfect for those who prefer minimalism over maximalism.
